As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • Uses the official DANMS submission template (Word/LaTeX, available on the journal website).
  • All authors meet standard authorship criteria (contribution to conception, design, writing, and approval of the final version).
  • Statement on the use of generative AI tools (if applicable) prepared, including details of tools used and human oversight.
  • Creative practice includes a clear written component (practice-based research paper, artist statement, or reflective essay).
  • All supplementary materials (datasets, code, interview transcripts, additional videos) prepared and organized.
  • APC policy and publication terms (CC BY 4.0 license) reviewed and understood.

Welcome to the author guidelines for Digital Art & New Media Studies (DANMS). These standards are designed to support the preparation of rigorous, accessible submissions aligned with the journal’s interdisciplinary scope, including theoretical research, critical essays, and practice-based creative work. All authors are required to review these guidelines carefully before submission.

1. Pre-Submission Eligibility

  • ✅ Manuscript is original, unpublished, and not under review or consideration for other journals or publications.
  • ✅ Work aligns with the journal’s scope: digital art history, new media theory, computational creativity, XR/immersive art, digital culture studies, or related critical practice.
  • ✅ All co-authors have read and approved the submission, including the order of authorship.
  • ✅ Corresponding author is authorized to submit on behalf of all authors and serve as the primary contact for editorial communications.

2. Manuscript Types & Word Count Requirements

  • Research Articles: 6,000–10,000 words (excluding references and appendices). Includes original theoretical or empirical research, with clear methodology and critical analysis.
  • Critical Essays: 3,000–6,000 words. Reflective or polemical pieces on contemporary issues in digital art and new media.
  • Practice-Based Studies: 4,000–8,000 words. Includes a written critical reflection paired with creative practice documentation (images, video, code).
  • Reviews & Roundtables: 1,500–3,000 words. Critical reviews of exhibitions, books, or projects, or multi-author discussions on key themes.

3. Formatting Standards & Official Templates

All submissions must use the official DANMS templates to ensure consistency in structure, citation formatting, and anonymization for double-blind review. Templates are available in three formats:

Note: Templates include anonymization fields for double-blind review. Remove all author/affiliation information before submission.

4. Citation & Bibliographic Standards

Authors may use either of the following citation styles, consistently throughout the manuscript:

  • APA 7th Edition: Preferred for empirical research and practice-based studies. Includes in-text citations and a reference list.
  • Chicago Notes and Bibliography (17th Edition): Preferred for theoretical and critical essays. Uses footnotes/endnotes and a bibliography.

For practice-based works, include citations for creative works, exhibitions, and media projects. Example formats are provided in the PDF formatting guide.

5. Practice-Based & Creative Work Specifications

Submissions including digital artworks, generative code, interactive media, or XR projects must include:

  • A written critical reflection contextualizing the work within relevant theory or practice.
  • High-resolution documentation: images (300 DPI, JPG/PNG) or video (MP4, max 10 minutes, 1080p).
  • For code/algorithmic works: open code files (with comments), version details, and a README file explaining functionality.
  • For interactive/XR works: system requirements, user instructions, and technical documentation.

6. Ethics & Authorship Responsibilities

  • All authors must meet standard academic authorship criteria (contribution to conception, design, writing, and final approval).
  • A Conflict of Interest (COI) statement must be prepared and uploaded separately during submission.
  • If using generative AI tools (e.g., text, image, or code generators), include a clear disclosure of tools used, version details, and human oversight processes.
  • All third-party materials (images, music, datasets) must include written copyright permission and proper attribution.

7. Copyright & Open Access Policy

All published articles are released under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0). Authors retain full copyright of their work, while granting the journal perpetual rights to publish, distribute, and archive the manuscript.
