Information For Authors

Welcome to Digital Art & New Media Studies (DANMS), a peer-reviewed open access journal aligned with the standards of leading international publications in digital art and new media research. We invite scholars, artists, and practitioners to submit rigorous, interdisciplinary work that bridges theory, practice, and critical inquiry in the field. All submissions undergo a transparent double-blind peer review process, with open access publication under the CC BY 4.0 license to ensure maximum visibility for your research.

1. Journal Scope & Accepted Manuscript Types

DANMS publishes work at the intersection of digital art, media theory, and creative technology, including but not limited to digital aesthetics, generative art, VR/AR/XR art, media archaeology, computational creativity, network art, digital performance, AI art, and the cultural politics of new media. We accept the following manuscript types, each tailored to the unique needs of the field:

  • Research Articles: Theoretical, empirical, or historical studies (6,000–10,000 words)
  • Practice-Based Research Papers: Documentation and analysis of creative practice (5,000–8,000 words, with supplementary media documentation)
  • Critical Essays: Reflective or polemical pieces on contemporary issues (3,000–6,000 words)
  • Artist Interviews & Exhibition Reviews: Critical engagements with artists or exhibitions (2,000–4,000 words)

2. Submission Requirements & Formatting

All submissions must be original, unpublished work not under consideration elsewhere. To preserve double-blind review, manuscripts must be anonymized (remove all author names, affiliations, and identifying information). Manuscripts may follow either the Chicago Notes and Bibliography style (17th edition) or APA 7th edition for citations, with consistency throughout. Practice-based submissions must include a detailed artist statement, technical documentation, and links to media files (images, videos, interactive works) hosted on permanent platforms. All submissions must be prepared using the official DANMS templates (Word/LaTeX) available for download.

3. Ethical Guidelines & Authorship

All authors must adhere to COPE publication ethics standards, including full disclosure of conflicts of interest, proper attribution of third-party materials, and confirmation that all co-authors have approved the submission. For submissions including human participants (e.g., audience studies of interactive art), authors must provide evidence of ethical review board approval. Practice-based works must include documentation of copyright permissions for any third-party assets, and generative art submissions are encouraged to include open-source code repositories for transparency.

4. Publication Process & Peer Review

Submissions undergo an initial editorial screening to confirm alignment with journal scope and guidelines. Eligible manuscripts proceed to double-blind peer review by two or more experts in the field, who evaluate originality, rigor, and contribution to the field. Reviewers provide detailed feedback, and authors receive a decision of Accept, Minor Revisions, Major Revisions, or Reject within 4–6 weeks. Accepted manuscripts are copyedited, formatted, and published online with a permanent DOI, and are immediately available open access to readers worldwide.

5. APC Pricing & Publication Benefits

DANMS operates on an open access model with transparent Article Processing Charges (APCs), charged only upon acceptance (no submission fees). The 2026 launch rate is $490 USD, with a standard rate of $790 USD effective from 2027. APCs cover peer review coordination, copyediting, typesetting, digital archiving, and indexing in leading databases including Crossref, DOAJ, and Google Scholar. Authors from low-income countries are eligible for full APC waivers, and editorial board members receive a 50% discount on submissions.

6. Author Support & Resources

Authors can access official submission templates, citation guides, and practice-based research documentation guidelines via the journal website. For questions about submission requirements, peer review, or APC pricing, please contact the editorial office at [email protected].
